Community Mapping Assistance Project


Steven Romalewski joined New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) in 1984 and has extensive experience as an environmental researcher and advocate, and with community mapping concepts and applications. In 1994, he brought GIS to NYPIRG as a component of our environmental organizing and advocacy work with community groups across the state. Steven was awarded a Revson Fellowship at Columbia University in 1995, and continued on at Columbia to receive a masters degree in urban planning in 1998. He expanded his expertise in GIS and urban issues while at Columbia, and launched Community Mapping Assistance Project (CMAP) while completing his graduate studies.
Steven provides overall management of CMAP's project work and client relations, providing outreach for our services, securing foundation support, obtaining and maintaining CMAP's extensive data sets, and preparing maps and spatial analysis based on client requests.
